Young Documenters 'Takeover' Colston Hall!
On Saturday 19th September a group of young people from Knowle West Media Centre demonstrated their skills in photography, filmmaking and journalism when they captured the excitement of a large-scale arts and music event at Colston Hall.
They had been awarded a commission to document the New Generation Takeover, a day of performances and workshops in music, circus, graffiti, theatre and comedy, all programmed by and for young people.
Armed with digital and video cameras and sound recording equipment, members of , Mouth of the South (article available shortly) and Nlarge Photography captured the diversity of the action, the energy and bustle of the atmosphere and the responses of visitors.
They interviewed the event organisers, members of the young people's steering group and performers from the Champloo Dance Crew, as well as Knowle West's own Static Flow dance group.
With irrepressible enthusiasm they then conducted 'vox pops', interviewing members of the public and asking for their opinions on the event.
After a busy day, they returned with over an hour of footage and hundreds of excellent images.
Comments from the young reporters
'I enjoyed it all, I want to do more of it! I was [conducting interviews and] asking people what they'd enjoyed; I'd never done anything like that before. I was quite shy but I got used to it; I felt confident after I'd done it for a few hours!'
'I have a passion for filming but I'd never done it on my own, on that sort of scale. I'd like to do more documenting and maybe make some films in the future.'
Photographs coming soon!
