Kid Carpet
“The Language Lab”
In a break from his usual musical work, artist in residence Ed Patrick (a.k.a. Kid Carpet) has been experimenting with translation and Chinese whispers. He’s been taking famous texts, stories, nursery rhymes, pop songs and speeches and translating them into various foreign languages.
When these new texts are translated back into English, the sense becomes abstracted and confused and a new mistranslation is edited together from the best of what’s gone wrong.
On Wednesday 27th October Ed performed at KWMC. Concentrating on spoken word during the first half, he read jumbled versions of fairy tales, tourist commentaries and aircraft safety instructions, before recreating the story of the Three Little Pigs, complete with props. His impeccable delivery and comic timing had the audience laughing throughout.
In the second half he performed, amongst others, an endearingly muddled version of Frank Sinatra's 'My Way', a rendition of 'I have a dream', Martin Luther King's most famous speech, and new song 'Golden Fingers', a re-working of the James Bond theme 'Goldfinger'.
Ed's superb performance was watched by a packed studio audience.
